Dear Readers,
Today’s yarn review is the Aldi Double Knit yarn. Jack Helped me with this one. 😉
Yarn Company : Sew Crafty Knit & Purl
Name of Yarn: Double Knit
Colourway: Magenta
Grams: 100g
Metres: 300
Material: 100% Acrylic
Weight: Double Knit
Needle and hook size: Label does not specify so I would recommend 4mm as a starting point
Wash instructions: Machine Wash 30, do not bleach, do not iron.
Price of yarn: £ 3.99 for 4 balls
Knitted Swatch
Before Washing
10cmx10cm = 21 stitches x 28 rows (I used a 4mm needle)
After Washing
10cmx10cm = 21 stitches x 28 rows
So there was no change to the knitted gauge after washing.
Crochet Swatch
Before Washing
10x10cm for
US single crochet /UK double crochet – 21 stitches x 23 rows
US double crochet /UK treble crochet – 21 stitches x 10 rows (I used a 4mm hook)
After Washing
10x10cm for
US single crochet /UK double crochet –Â 21 stitches x 28 rows
US double crochet /UK treble crochet – 21 stitches x 8 rows
Washing experience:
It is nice that this is machine washable, it makes the finished project easy to care for. I did dry it flat although the label did not specify to do so. The fabric did not become noticeably softer or harder after washing and drying.
Other Thoughts:
This is not the softest acrylic I have ever felt but for its price I think that it compares well with other things that are out there. It is certainly not a scratchy acrylic and I could wear this next to skin.
Price comparison:
I am going to compare the price with Hayfield Bonus DK and Robin DK because I feel that they are of a similar quality.
At the time of writing Hayfield Bonus DK is available at:
Woolwarehouse for : £1.85 for 100g
Hobbycraft : £2.40 for 100g
At the time of writing Robin DK is available at :
Woolwarehouse : £1.99
Abakhan: £1.90 (note I have never purchased from this site) (I feel that it is important to note that I have never purchased this yarn from an oline sight and only at my local stores)
Aldi Double Knit Magenta is £3.99 for 4 which makes it around £1 per ball so there is a definite saving here although you do need to buy a whole pack of four with one colour.
I hope that you found this review useful. If you have any suggestions about other things you would have wanted to know about the yarn please let me know in the comments below and of course if you have any questions please do let me know too.
Keep Crafty!
Peace and Love

Teal and Jack grey are another good combo. I went through a phase where I envisioned different capsule wardrobe palettes. One combo I like is charcoal grey as the neutral and teal and magenta or fuchsia as the main colors.

Haha I hadn’t thought of that! That is very true, maybe I need to knit a jumper in that colour combo !

Jack is so handsome – and magenta and smoke grey go together very well indeed!
